When it comes to decisions about real estate, consumers are increasingly pessimistic. In fact, their sentiment about homebuying conditions fell to its second-lowest reading in a decade, according to a July 2022 report from Fannie Mae on Home Purchase Sentiment. But that negative sentiment shouldn’t be read as a mark against their desire for homeownership. During the last 12 months, they’ve frequently expressed in sentiment surveys that they would prefer to buy a home, rather than rent. Simply put: people want to own a home; they’re just not sure they can.
